12 December 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 12th [December 1897]. Nela & I went to morning service. Coming away we saw Clara Montalba so we seized upon her & persuaded her to come home to lunch with us & were happy eno’ to get her to do so. She is such a delightful woman—clever, straightforward—handsome—noble & good. She gave me many hints about copying the pictures in small—as I am doing. We took her to her home in the afternoon & gave her some plants—& she gave me some paints & good paper to paint on. We then left her & went on to take tea with Mme Wiel. Sat talking some time & then came home–
