29 January 1898 — En route to London
Saturday. 29th [January 1898]. Morning. We were the only passengers besides a young American girl who put herself under my wing & who was not well. I gave her a little brandy & Nela & I had coffee for we had only had a little tea & coffee since Bâle. Had a perfectly smooth crossing of 3 hours– On getting to Dover we parted with our friend who went to Victoria Station & we to Charing Cross. Nela was met by her sisters & we parted. Blanche met me & said Arthur tho’ very ill was better & she took me to her house. Edward was at home with a bad cold—& he told me all that had happened. How Dr Bond had been much alarmed suddenly abt Arthur & had begged Constance to tell the family– An operation had been performed wh had given relief to his sufferings but had left him in a very critical state– I got some luncheon—washed & went off to 40 Half Moon St where I found Nellie Alderson & Arthur Du Cane in a great state & rather upset at Constance having acted as she did—but wh it seems to us she cd not help doing. Mr Burcham the lawyer had lost his head & also acted very foolishly. It appears Arthur has a tumour wh they hoped to remove & found it cd not be done—& now fear he will always be an invalid. Blood poisoning also threatens. I went to his door & looked in upon him. The nurse said he was not really conscious—but there was nothing more to be done. Dr Bond looks very serious & says the danger is still there. I went back to Cav. Sqr to dine & then went back to Half Moon St to hear the Dr’s last opinion. Nellie who is staying at my house in Savile Row came back also after dinner & we both missed the Dr who however, left a note to say he believes Arthur is going to get over the shock of the operation & we went off to our beds having left all in order for the night. It is a fearful time & I am glad I am here. The whole family seems relieved at my being with Nellie to help her.
