8 February 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 8th [February 1898]. Breakfasted in my room. Nelly went off to Half Moon St as usual before 9. At 11 I walked to Arlington Street to call on my brother Ivor. At his door I met Rhuvon Guest & went in together. While he saw his uncle I sat with Elaine & saw him afterwards. We talked over our brother Arthur’s illness & sympathised together. From there I walked to St Margaret’s church Westr where I had appointed to meet Sophy Palmer at 12.15 that we might see the Memorial tablet which I have at last got put up to Henry there. We thought it looked very well—& I am relieved to think that it is done. His country have not cared to show any mark of honor to his name & so I have done what I could myself—quite quietly to preserve it from future oblivion—if only for a short time in this world where everything crumbles away in the end. Perhaps in some future ages someone may discover in the ruins of London his monument in the same way as he discovered those of the Nineveh of old. I feel glad my name should stand at the end of the inscription—no one else will know what it means but it makes the whole thing more personal. Sophy came back here to lunch with me & left directly after. I then walked to Half Moon St & on the way met Mr Burton & told him Arthur hoped to see him when he was better wh pleased him. Nelly was out but Rhuvon was there & I had a talk with him about his father’s illness. He was somewhat less depressed & seems to be growing more accustomed to the idea. We walked as far as Albemarle St & there I left him & went on to Bond St to shop & returned home to tea at which Connie joined me at 5. Nelly did not come back to dinner so I dined at 8 & went to bed at 10.
