10 February 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 10th [February 1898]. Nelly off to Half Moon St by 9 as usual– Arthur Du Cane came to see me abt 10. At 11 I walked to 17 Cav. Sqr. Found Blanche & her secy at loggerheads– Smoothed them down & encouraged her secy Miss Jeffereys– Walked on to 35 Wimpole St & called on Lady Thompson but did not go in as she was engaged. Walked on to 25 Park Crescent—sat with Maria & had lunch with her—Ruth & the twins. Maria drove me to Duke St where I ordered some house linen– Went in also for a moment to 49 Montague Sqr to see Alice Murray in her new house. From Duke Street I walked to Half Moon St & found Nelly had left a message that Arthur wished to see me—so I went up & sat with him for a little while. He is certainly stronger—but by all he says one can see he has little hope for himself. He said I must go down to Bere & arrange with the gardener how the garden is to be arranged for the summer. He said he was weary of lying in one position—& that even in his sleep he never forgets his state. I told him not to think & he answered—I never think—if I began to think I should go mad– Poor fellow. It is terrible for he has still strength & a certain amount of youth. He is only two years older than I am!
