11 February 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 11th [February 1898]. I went out at 11 & got my hair washed at Truefits & then went to Hatchard to buy books. I found only “The Saracens” one of the Story of Nations series that I want & then I walked down Piccadilly to Cadogan Square to lunch with Lady Vivian. She was not returned to town but her young son Lord Vivian was there & received me very nicely. He is a tall good looking youth now “cramming” for diplomatic service. His little sister was also there. His mother & elder sister returned when we were half thro’ lunch & I remained till 3.30 with her chatting & then having promised to dine with her next Tuesday I walked to Half Moon Street & sat ½ hour with my brother Arthur who was a good deal stronger & more cheerful. Went home to tea at 5—& had quiet time till Nelly came home to dinner at 8.30. This morning I had a visit from Dr Cottle who had formerly lived here in this house with my brother Monty. He asked to be allowed to put his present address on our area railings wh I could not refuse to do—& I showed him the house in its present state. He was concerned to hear of Arthur’s illness & said he had treated him some 25 years ago when first he had troubles. He told me that he believed there is a picture of a Lady Mornington done in the dining room here in wh the wood panelling is depicted picked out with gold as it now still is & that the Duke of Wellington spent his youth here.
