21 February 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 21st February [1898]. I like the look of Thomas Wraight who came to see for the butler’s place here & I wrote to Honble Mrs Ryder for his character. Giovanni Merlini, an old servant came to see me– He tells me his wife—(my old maid Hill) is ailing. They are living at Wimbledon retired from business & comfortably off. Arthur Du Cane called for me & took me to Waterloo Station & we left for Wareham by 12.30 train taking Arthur’s cook Jane Battrick with us. We reached Wareham abt 3.30 & found Amos (Battrick) waiting for us with the fat poney in the “van.” Just as we got near Bere it began to rain– The rain soon turned into thick snowflakes—& it did not cease all the evening.
