23 February 1898 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Wednesday. 23rd [February 1898]. It froze 4 degrees in the night but the postman managed to get thro’ the roads rather quicker today. I had settled to go to Inwood today but had to give it up as the road to Blandford & Wareham was impassable—& there was no sending telegrams all the wires being broken down. The sun came out brilliantly & melted a good deal of snow. I managed to get out in the garden & inspected the houses with the gardener Parrant– Arthur went out shooting. We played besique in the evening.
