11 March 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 11th [March 1898]. I began to make an inventory of the furniture which belongs to my brother Monty & which is about in the rooms I occupy & so is amongst my furniture. Miss Hogarth (C. Dickens sister in law) came to lunch with me. I left her directly after lunch & ran off to see Arthur & then returned to her & took her out walking. We went to St James’ Park & saw the Princess of Wales returning in State from Buckingham Palace to Marlboro House. She had been holding a Drawing Room for the Queen. We specially admired her escort—very fine specimens of the race. We walked on to Hotel Cecil in the Strand where I deposited Miss Hogarth to pay a visit & I walked back home– Passing I looked into the open door of my father’s old house 8 Spring Gardens—now Govt offices. I had not seen inside those doors since we left forty four years ago—& how varied has been my life since then! Bee Eliot came to tea & Mr Bland called. He was a secy in the Embassy with us at Consple & is now 1st sec. at the Hague. Dined alone—Nelly out–
