12 March 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 12th March [1898]. I went out directly after breakfast to a shop & then to have my hair washed & home again. After lunch I walked to Half Moon St to see Arthur but as Mr Burton came at the same time I did not remain. I went to call on Baroness Burdett Coutts at 1 Stratton St & after waiting to see her for a long time she appeared. I had profitted of the time to look at some of her lovely pictures. A splendid watercolour by Prout—The Market Place at Ghent—& a portrait of Sir Walter Scott by Roeburn besides a Raphael &c &c. The Bss was very kind as usual. She really is wonderful so sympathetic so interested in others & so warm hearted. She must be a great age & is very plain but is active & bright. She tells me she is about to wind up the Turkish Compassionate Fund wh she helped me to start in aid of the poor Turkish Women who were refugees from Bulgaria during the Russo Turkish war in 1878. With £50 wh she sent out to me to buy silks & work frames we started a work wh has gone on till now & paid itself. Mrs Arthur Hanson the English lady at Consple who directed it is now so ill she has to give it up & the end having been obtained & the poor Turkish women taught how to make their livelihood we may all be satisfied. I went on to Cav Sqr to see Duncannon who is laid up with the gout—thence to Park Crescent & had tea with Maria. Met there Nela’s friend Miss Ruth Whitbread– Nela accompanied me home to my door on foot. I was tired & glad to rest. Nelly dined with me coming in late after having done all she had to do for Arthur at Half Moon Street.
