28 March 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 28th March [1898]. Got a note in the morning from Lady Gregory to say she had news of the sudden death of her brother Gerald Persse. I went off to see her at Q. Anne’s Mansions before lunch. Evely Eliot turned up to lunch. At 2.30 I went to Half Moon St found Arthur ever so much brighter. Walked with Nellie a little & then returned home & found Eda Alderson & Nela Du Cane waiting to see me– They did not remain long. Had a visit from Katie Bagot & also Mrs Sydney Glyn & then Lady Vivian who carried me off to see the skating at Prince’s Club. It is a pretty sight & some of the ladies skate very well. A band plays & some of them walse as they go. There are instructors, young French men. Lady Vivians 3 daughters were skating. I also saw there Mrs Walker née Clark whose father has only been dead abt 3 weeks. I was surprised. She was in black but not mourning. Truly the world is getting very queer & too unconventional & I believe harder & less feeling. Lady Gregory came & dined but was very miserable about her brother & cried bitterly & at all events she has real feeling– I was very sad about her—& sent her home early to bed–
