4 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 4th [April 1898]. The footman William gave me notice to leave. I am sorry he has been 3 years with me. He is very delicate & I am sure he will not do so well anywhere else. He had hardly done this when the new housemaid said she wishes to leave at her month. This I do not mind—but it is all very unsettling. Eda Alderson came abt 12.30. One Eliza Knapp recommended by the Du Canes came to be inspected & to offer herself as my lady’s maid. I agreed with her & wrote for her character. Let us hope to be settled. Besides Eda there was Nelly at lunch & Connie joined us after we had sat down. They all departed directly after Eda returning to Lutterworth. I went to see Arthur. I told him I had a telegram from Cornelia asking me to go & stay with her & Ivor at Princes Hotel at Brighton– I thought of going & accepted but when I spoke abt it to Arthur I found he was against it so not to worry him I settled not to go—really I am worried in every direction & hardly know what to do– Nela DC came to tea—& later I walked to Q. Anne’s Mansions to see Augusta Gregory who leaves for Ireland tonight with her son for his holidays. Nellie dined with me.
