29 April 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 29th [April 1898]. Eda went to spend the morning with Elaine to help her to pack preparatory for her marriage departure. Went to see Arthur at 2.30 but being rather late I was not able to see him as he was just going out in his bath chair—so I returned home to fetch Eda & we went together to the Private View of the R.A. There was a curious powerful & revolting portrait by Sargent of the Jew antiquary Wertheimer—a caricature– Lord Powerscourt who took me to see it said it was called Shylock. The black poodle by his side with his long tongue hanging out & it has been called the “lb. of flesh.” We returned home to tea at 5. Nela DC came to tea. I went to dine with the wedding party at Wimborne House. Lord Rodney took me to table & I had Sir Algernon West on my right. Elaine was in high spirits. She & Mr Villiers sat near me—so that I could observe them. Saw the wedding gifts which are numerous but not very beautiful.
