2 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row | |
Monday. 2nd [May 1898]. Today’s papers announces a terrible naval fight at Manila between Spain & America who beseiged the Island– Evidently the Spaniards were beaten & there was great slaughter. It is too horrible. I wrote letters. Eda went out. After lunch I walked to Half Moon St & found Arthur was just going out in a Bath Chair. The day was sultry & it blew a good deal & rained a little. Arthur had spent the morning downstairs in his dining room & was said to be very tired & to be weak in the head. However it was decided he had better go out. Nellie & the nurse got him into his chair—& I followed & joined the party in Green Park & he was taken for one turn round– He spoke very little & did not seem to enjoy it. As we passed opposite St James’ Club where he used to spend so much of his time the poor fellow put his hands over his eyes—in a sort of despair. It was trying to see. I walked home when he went into his own house– I feel very depressed about him. I am sure he is not so well– Miss Oswell came to dine & work with me & left at 10.30. | |
