3 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row | |
Tuesday. 3rd May [1898]. The account Nellie gave last night when she returned to dine is not satisfactory. She says Arthur left very sick while out & was much fatigued. I agreed to go to see Mr Bond & ask if he would not like to move Arthur up to this house– At 11 Eda & I walked to Half Moon St & found he had had a good night & was better. It appears Bond fears he is being blood poisoned again by the tumour. I left Eda with Nellie & walked across the Green Park to the Sanctuary to Bonds House but he was out at the Police Court attending the case of Dr Collins for the death of Mrs Aziell’s on whom he is accused of having performed an unlawful operation. It causes much excitement at this moment. I walked home rather tired– The day was hot & muggy & showery. After lunch Eda & I went again to Half Moon St & I saw Arthur for a moment. Mr Alfred Burton being with him I only stayed a few moments. Eda & I walked to Cadogan Sqr & payed Lady Vivian a visit. Went on in a hansom to Mrs Arthur Layard’s & ordered a boddice of her for my sister Kate. Then drove across to Park Crescent & had tea with Maria. Met there Miss Green late Governess to the Empress Fredericks children. Walked home. En route met Blanche & turned back a short way with her, & then went home quite tired out. I dined alone & went early to bed—& wrote letters before I slept. I got a letter from Mme Riaño yesterday saying her husband is ill & all Madrid very disturbed at the War– She was pleased at my having written to Sagasta—& had sent him my note. The news from Manila today talk of its destruction & 400 Spaniards killed! This in the name of humanity to Cuba! It is too horrible! | |
