4 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 4th May [1898]. My footman Wm Austin left me today so I had to go over the list of the plate with him in the morng. It was a very dull depressing day—showery. I went to Half Moon St directly after lunch. Saw Arthur & he was a little bright—but not able to keep up much conversation. While waiting for Blanche to fetch me to take a drive with her Mr Bond Arthur’s Dr came in to say that as he had thought A. less well when last he saw him he would bring Mr Gould the surgeon to see him at 5.45 this evening. I asked him whether he thought it would be well to move Arthur to my house as it was getting warm & 41 Half Moon St was so small & stuffy. He thought it would be so & said he wd propose it to Arthur this evening. It was a showery day so after driving a little Blanche took me to Mrs Rates where we had 5 o’cl tea. Thence we went to the Garry Hill Depot 20 Brook St. I left her there & hurried back on foot to Half Moon Street. The Drs Bond & Gould were still there—Mrs Jellicoe was also there. When the Drs came down from Arthur’s room they looked grave & said they found him a good deal worse. The tumour was increasing & they found the kidneys were affected—still they think it is better he should be moved to Savile Row. Arthur Du Cane came a few minutes after they left & he walked home with me. Louis Du Cane & Henry Alderson dined with us—& Laura the housemaid did the part of parlour maid with great success. Henry A. left early & Isabel Du Cane came & carried off her brother Louis to an evening party.
