9 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row | |
Monday. 9th [May 1898]. I had the window cleaners & we all set to work to move furniture & arrange the rooms. At breakfast Nelly said Arthur might be expected here at 6 P.M. but about 11 she came rushing in to say he wished to come at 12 this morning & so we had to hurry to get his bedroom ready. Abt 12.15 a cab arrived with his couch & pillows which we got quickly put into place—ready for him—& abt ¼ hour after his bath chair with him came round Burlington St Nelly & the nurse Papworth by his side. I saw him from the drawing room window & then got out of the way so that I might not add to the confusion. He had 2 men with a carrying chair to carry him down the stairs at Half Moon Street—& as soon as he was in his bath chair the men came here & carried him up the stairs to his bedroom & he got on his couch. When I thought he was quietly settled I went in to see him. He took my hand & pressed in long & looked a long look to express his thanks to me for having him here—& we understood each other without a word. After resting a while in the afternoon he talked about his things around him, the pictures &c & seemed very pleased. His couch was wheeled into the drawing room—& the men went to Half Moon St & brought his bed & set it up in its place here. Leaving him comfortable I went out for a walk & Nellie remained with him. I went to Wimborne House to excuse myself from dining there as I had promised Cornelia to do—being too tired & glad to go early to bed– Mr Bond came in eveng & said A. had borne the change well. | |
