23 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 23rd May [1898]. Arthur had a good night. I sat with him while he had his breakfast on his couch in the drawing room & then I went to Truefits to get my hair washed. Sat with Arthur a while before lunch. His head was clearer than usual. He said “Poor Mr Guest”– I said you are weary & he answered “I am tired of it all.” Poor fellow. It is hard for him to bear & it is very very sad– He would not have any luncheon said he had a headache & was wheeled back into his room & there remained he said waiting for the Dr who was not really coming till 5. He got nervous & worried over it. Dr Bond was not satisfied with him when he came & considers his wandering head is a bad sign. Mr Bircham came just before the Dr & got Arthur to sign a cheque. Nellie had a telegram from Cairo to say Rhuvon will be here on 2nd June. Bond seems anxious he should come but he cannot be got here sooner than that & he probably starts the day after tomorrow. When Bond had gone Arthur was wheeled back into the drawing room & Nellie & I sat with him we sewing & he sleeping. Abt 5 he went to bed. We went to dinner. Bond says poor Arthur is getting quite childish & says he will probably be more difficult to manage as the days go on– Blood poisoning is undermining the brain. Mildred came today but did not see her father. Old Lady Bessboro called [on] me this afternoon & also Lady Waldegrave. I did not go out in the afternoon–
