24 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 24th May [1898]. I was down a little late this morning & found Arthur in the drawing room having his breakfast. He said he had slept very well—& had already seen Mr Beasley the secretary of the Taff Vale Railway. I could hardly believe it but soon saw that he was perfectly clear in his mind & so happily he remained all day. He saw Monty after his breakfast. Later he saw Col. Cuthbert Larkin who was delighted to find him so much better– He could not see Mildred when she called tho’ she came twice but he happened to be back in his own room & the door shut. Theo called to enquire abt him in the morning & Ivor came in to see me & asked what the Dr Bond thought of him & whether Arthur was well eno’ for the Wimbornes to venture to take a house for Ascot. I promised to find out & let him know. Nellie & I went up after our lunch to sit with Arthur. I had my coffee– He & Nellie had champagne & Nellie a cigarette as Arthur likes the smell of it. Soon after 3 we went for a walk Nellie & I to Cav. Sqr where I left her & went in to see Blanche who was in bed indisposed– From there I walked on to 49 Montagu Sqr to tea with Theo & Augusta. Met there Lady Jersey, Mr & Mrs J. Medlycott—Lady Eustace Cecil and Sir Wm Marriott. I walked home by 5.15 & found Merthyr sitting with Arthur & a Mr Wodehouse with Nellie in the drawing room. He has just returned from Italy & was at Milan during the late riots wh he says were clerical & very serious—some 500 insurgents having been killed & 1500 wounded—6 officers & 40 soldiers were also killed. All this has been kept as much as possible out of the newspapers. Arthur was brought back to the drawing room & then Dr Bond came—& pretended he had only looked in to have some tea– He had not wished to tell Arthur beforehand that he was coming as he worries over it so much. He was surprised to find him so well & his mind so clear. He invited me & Nellie to go on Saty to his house from which to see Gladstones funeral & we accepted. I asked him what Ivor wished to know & he said Arthur is so much better he thinks we may hope he will keep so for the present. So I went to Wimborne Hse saw Cornelia & told her. While I was out Mr Gould came to see Arthur. Bond had been so anxious abt him yesterday he got Gould to call. Arthur went back to his room about 7.30 & soon after to bed. Nellie & I dined in the studio & worked till ten when Nellie went to Half Moon St to bed. Nellie told Arthur this morng that Rhuvon had written to say he was coming home in June so we wish to prepare him to see him on 2nd & he seemed to take no notice of it.
