27 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 27th [May 1898]. Arthur has had another good day tho’ this morng there was another slight return of hemorrhage. I gave him his breakfast in the morning & he told me he had received news that Rhuvon was coming home & he had the telegram read to him over again. Col. Larkin came to see him in the morning. Nellie & I had our lunch in the lobby on the front stairs & Arthur had his couch wheeled beside us & we had lunch together. Tho’ he failed in his attempt to eat meat he took some soup & pan cake & some strawberries & then had a glass of champagne. He enjoyed the impromptu meal & was cheered by joining in our meal—so it was a great success. He was wheeled into the drawing room afterwards for his champagne—Nellie’s cigarette & my coffee—& then dropped asleep. I received a telegram from Lady Sophia Palmer asking if she could sleep here & I answered yes so Nellie & I walked to Half Moon St to say a bed was to be prepared for my maid for tonight & Sophy is to have her room here. From there we walked to Oxford St to shop– Then Nellie went back home & I walked on to Park Crescent to see Maria & stayed to tea with her. She was better & rested from her journey. I after tea interviewed her old nurse Thwaites– She said Maria was far more feeble & wished I could persuade her to have a nurse at nights. I promised to try & to think over what is to be done—& I walked home much oppressed at this new trouble looming before me. I found Arthur playing bésique with Mrs Jellico on my return so did not go to him. Mr Burton had seen him after we went out. We met him in the street & told him he could go & see him & he did so– Dined with Nellie in the studio at 8—& soon after Sophy arrived. Gave her some refreshment & we went to bed & now I must go to sleep—as I have to be up early to go to see Gladstone’s funeral tomorrow morng.
