28 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 28th [May 1898]. Breakfast at 8.30. Sophy went off to the Abbey at that hour. Abt 9.15 Mr C. Wyld came & Nellie also from Half Moon Street & we walked by Waterloo Place, the D. of York’s column & Green Park to Broad Sanctuary to Mr Bond’s house which is just opposite the Westr Hospital. We got there abt 9.45 & were kindly received by the Dr & his wife & daughter. He then left us to take his seat in the Abbey Mrs Gladstone having sent him one because he had once attended her. We had to wait till nearly 11 but I made acquaintance with a very pleasant man a Mr Frank Owen & his mother a widowed lady. He is connected in some way with Canada & knew some of the Hansons—Mr Herbert Poole, the James Bakers & a young van Millingen—all Constantinople people so we had a pleasant chat. At abt 11 the procession came in sight—the gentlemen in morning cloths made no effect & the sight was not impressive. The coffin on a low bier drawn by 2 horses was covered with a white pall & was the only thing to relieve the black. The road from Westr Hall was kept clear by policemen & the crowd was orderly & the men nearly all took off their hats. As soon as the procession had gone into the Abbey we thought of leaving but Mrs Bond offered us refreshments & after taking a sandwich we went off & walked back to Savile Row. Found Arthur had had a good night & was very bright. He had received some seedling carnations one of wh he at once named after the Empress Frederick & we packed it in cotton wool & sent it off to her by post. I wrote to her to explain. I was dreadfully tired & after luncheon which we had in the lobby & of wh Arthur partook freely he made me go to my own room to rest & sent the nurse to give me “ante kaninia” a medicine to calm the nerves. I soon fell asleep & only got up to go down to tea at 5 but I went regularly to bed at 7 & slept all the evening thoroughly worn out.
