29 May 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 29th [May 1898]. Woke revived & refreshed & went to service at 10 at the Marlboro’ House Chapel Royal taking Nurse Papworth with me. Coming out we met the SubDean Mr Shepherd & I asked him to give Nurse a place in the St James’ Chapel Royal next Sunday which he promised to do. Then home. Wrote a letter to Pss Charlotte of Saxe Meiningen & sent her the bill for the two sofas I had made for her at Venice. Lunched on the stair lobby & Arthur with us—& he had an excellent appetite. After lunch Nellie went out. Mrs Jellico came about 4 at 5 I made tea & as Sir Henry Thompson came to call I took my tea & his downstairs & we had it there. I sat out some time in the Pavilion on the court garden—& read before tea– After tea Arthur played bésique with Mrs Jellico & I went off to see Maria. Met Charlie Eliot coming to see me & further on Ruth & Nela– Charlie left us in Conduit Street & I went on with the girls to Park Crescent. I had a long talk with Maria after Sir Edmund Du Cane, who was calling then left to persuade her to have a maid-nurse to wait upon her & attend to her. I think she will do this & seemed relieved at the idea & ended by saying she was not tired & would like to go downstairs with me—so she took my arm & went to the door & she said she would like to go out & no one was about & would notice her cap—so we went to the gardens & called Ruth & Nela who were within & had the key & they let us in. I urged Maria to let me find her an attendant & begged her to let herself be taken care of– I told her she had always worked so hard for her husband & children & that now she must think of herself & save up her strength & nerves. It was just 8 when I looked at the watch so I had to leave Maria & rush home to dinner. Nela accompanied me as far at Oxford St. Found Mr Wyld & Nellie waiting for me for dinner. After dinner we had coffee in the Pav: & Mr Wyld left before 10. I went to give Arthur a kiss & bid him good night & came up to bed.
