11 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 11th June [1898]. Arthur had a good night & looked fresh & well this morning when I looked into the Drawing Room at 10 & found him at breakfast with Rhuvon. Afterwards they played bésique together. As Nurse Gillingham has to leave by order of the matron of her Hospital (Westr) on Monday Arthur got Nellie to go & buy her a little enamel watch for him to give her. She was much pleased & touched by his kind thought. Kate, Nellie & I sat & sewed downstairs—till lunch. Nellie lunched out. Kate, Rhuvon & I lunched with Arthur & we all went with him afterwards into the drawing room. He said I looked very tired & insisted upon my taking some “ante komina” & sitting in an arm chair & taking a rest & I slept for ½ an hour—while he kept the others quiet. I really was very overdone & the little rest refreshed me & more than that his kind thought of me. It was a very hot day. Abt 4 we left him & he went to his own room. Mr Beasley paid him a visit & was delighted to find him looking so much better than when last he saw him & really I have not seen him so much himself since I returned from Venice. Mrs Jellico & Rhuvon, Nellie & I had tea at 4. Dr Bond joined us after he had given Arthur his bath & Arthur soon after came in & had his coffee & cake looking so well it was hardly possible to believe he is a doomed man. I think he has now faced the worst & is now at peace & resigned to the inevitable. I am also getting calmer. After tea Kate & I went out for a little walk. We called on Mrs Borwick & found her just going to have dinner having come from one of Wagner’s operas & was going to return to hear the end of the opera. Came home. Kate dressed & went to dine at 17 Cav. Sqr. Rhuvon & I dined in the studio & went back to the drawing room. Found Arthur still up & we sat & talked with him till he went to bed at a little after 9. I went to have a little chat with Nurse Papworth at 10 & then to bed. Today Sophie Palmer came for an hour & had lunch at 1 in the studio on her way from station to station going from Oxford to pay a visit.
