27 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 27th [June 1898]. I breakfasted with Arthur in the drawing room at 10 o’clock. Had a visit from Mrs Edgar Layard who is in town for a few days while Edgar & his son Leo are in Ireland fishing. Nela Du Cane came in also for a few minutes. Nelly & I lunched with Arthur. We were sitting working in the drawing room where he lay on his couch after lunch when Merthyr walked in. He stayed but a short time. Mr Tornwald came to see Arthur with Mr Frank Bibby his bro: in law– They thought him looking better. It was showery & thundery all day & did not tempt one to go out. Mr Wyld came & saw Arthur. Cornelia sent him some lovely roses which I arranged in the drawing room– Mr Bond came at 5.30 & brought his daughter Peggy with him. We gave her tea while Mr Bond was superintending Arthur’s bath. Arthur himself came in & had his coffee while Mr Bond, Nellie & Rhuvon (who returned from the country just then) smoked. When they were gone Rhuvon played bésique with his father. I went for a walk. Returned at 7 & played patience by Arthur’s couch till 8 when Nellie & I dined in the studio. We went up to Arthurs for a few minutes afterwards. Nellie went to Half Moon St to bed at 10– After paying Nurse Papworth my usual eveng visit the last thing I came up to bed.
