29 June 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 29th [June 1898]. I was late down this morning. It was a hot day. Spent some time arranging flowers wh arrived from Bere. Some lovely roses. I lunched alone with Arthur. Then left him to sleep. Constance came & told me Rosie Guest is engaged to marry the son of Sir Mathew Redley. A good marriage which pleases her parents. Mr Burton came to see Arthur. At 3.30 Mr Frizzoni called for Nellie & me & took us to No 17 in this row (the Burlington club) to see a collection of old Italian pictures on loan where there are some lovely Luinis. Came home. Tea in the drawing room. Mrs Jellicoe, Nellie & Rhuvon. Daisy & Nela Du Cane came & I gave them tea in my sitting room. Mr Bond came to give Arthur his bath but being late I did not see him but walked with the Du Cane girls to Park Crescent. We were joined by Dacre D.C. who accompanied us. I found Maria lying on the sofa in her room– She seemed very well & in good spirits. When it was passed 7 I set off to walk home. Nela offered to walk part of the way with me. I took her all the way & asked her to dine with me. I found Miss Oswell there on my arrival at home. She was finishing arranging the type written copy of Henry’s MSS. We worked at it together & she dined with us—& she went away at 10. Signor Frizzoni called to ask for an order to see the pictures at Canford– I gave him a letter to the housekeeper. I went to see Arthur who was in bed but not asleep & bid him good night & gave him a kiss. He begged me to take some hair brush of his wh he said was a very good sort. I took one & left him one. He is so anxious to give me anything he thinks I might like. Poor old boy. Nela left at 10.30 in a cab.
