1 July 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 1st July [1898]. My 55th birthday. I breakfasted in my room at 9 & as soon as I was dressed set off with Nurse Papworth in a hansom to the Zoological Gardens taking with me my small orange paraqueet Nibs to consult the Parrot House keeper as to the cause that he is pulling out all his feathers. He says it is a bad habit & difficult to break him of. It was a very lovely morning– Hot with a nice breeze & the garden were very pleasant. We drove to Park Crest & I paid Maria a little visit. Nurse went on her own ways. I walked home carrying the small cage with me. Arthur did not seem so well today. His head was not so clear & he cannot remember the words he wants to say. He slept a good deal. I lunched with him alone. He told me he cannot get used to his new nurse McArthur & asked me to speak to Bond abt changing her. I did so as soon as Mr Bond came abt 6 & he at once said he would see to it. Mrs Jellicoe came to tea & she & Rhuvon played piquet & I tried to learn. Bond said he found Arthur very much less well & alarmed me a good deal. Nurse P. did not take such a gloomy view. Rhuvon dined out. Nelly went out before lunch & did not return all day. I dined in the sitting room on a tray & sat talking to Nurse P. afterwards till bed time. Mrs Alexander Bagot came to see me after lunch. I watered the flowers in the patio & might have saved myself the trouble as it rains heavily this evening. The wind must have changed as I hear the Big Ben bell from Westr this evening.
