7 July 1898 — Chenies
Thursday. 7th [July 1898]. Louis left by an 8.40 train for London. Addie & I went by 10.20 & at Baker St we parted she was to return to Chenies in the evening. I went home getting there abt 11.30. I met Monty at the door; he was going out as I arrived. He told me he had met Princess Sophia Dss of Sparta who is in London & that she said she hoped to see me. I found that Arthur is not so well & in fact Bond was sent for last night & had come again this morning & said Arthur had better remain quiet in bed. I went into his room & he seemed to know me tho’ his head was not clear & he had a difficulty in expressing himself. He admired the roses Addie had given me for him– He said he liked his new nurse—but he could not follow any subject for more than a moment. It was very painful– He said once “I don’t know what I want”—& seemed weak & wearied & the tears came to his eyes. The nurse said he must be kept quiet. Nelly & I lunched in the stair lobby & Nelly took him some soup & he took a little—but he could not manage much. At 3 I went off to S. Audley St to see if Mrs Rate was there but she was not so I came home. Mildred & Jack Mansell came but could not see Arthur. Constance came & had a talk with Nurse Papworth. Mr Bond came at 5 for the bath & had tea with Nelly & Rhuvon & me. He took a very gloomy view & when he left I went off to see Cornelia & told her what he said. She was just getting into the carriage to go to Ranelagh & I found Elaine & Mr Villiers with her, they having just returned from their honeymoon– Cornelia was to leave tomorrow for Homburg & says she will now probably not go. On my way I met Mr & Mrs Curtis who had just arrived from Venice. She promised to come & see me. My brother Monty was in when I returned. I saw him & told him that Arthur is worse. Arthur & Dacre Du Cane called late. As Dacre goes tomorrow to join Merthyr in his yacht at Cowes I asked him to tell Merthyr. Lady Vivian came to see me. Nelly dined out. I made Rhuvon stay to dine with me & we sat out in the patio till past 10 as it was very hot. I went to see Arthur & found him sleeping soundly & went to bed after a talk with nurse Papworth.
