8 July 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 8th July [1898]. I was down by 8.30 to meet Mr Bond who came to see Arthur. He finds him weak & quite light headed. He told me he did not think he can live more than a week or 10 days. I breakfasted in my room & then went down. Arthur hardly knew me & seemed very ill– Rhuvon came at 10. Ivor & Cornelia came at 11 & say they have decided not to leave London. Mrs Curtis came to see me & to tell me of all our Venice friends. Miss Birch came to ask me if I would look after Robert Gregory tomorrow eveng & Sunday. The boy is up for his exeat & staying with her & Sir Arthur & they are going away tomorrow. Blanche came in (with Onie) directly after & said she will have Robert with her boys. Today & tomorrow are the Eton & Harrow cricket match at Lord’s & all the boys are in town for it. Connie came to enquire abt Arthur & saw Nurse Papworth. Mildred came at 5 & she & Rhuvon had tea in the drawing room with me. Mrs Watkins (Sir H. Thompson’s daughter) called & also Mr & Mrs Holmes White but did not stay long. After Bond had given Arthur his bath he came in to tea & said Arthur was quite off his head & did not know what he was doing but he was to be wheeled in on his couch & soon Nurse Gould brought him in looking very ill & not able to speak coherently. He said how to do to Mildred—& then looked at me as if asking who she was. We talked a little quietly & he fell off to sleep. Mildred saw Bond afterwards & talked to him about it. As Arthur was sleeping I walked out for a short time with Nelly. I went to Marlborough House & wrote my name on the Dss of Sparta. Then went to see Cornelia & Ivor to say Bond would go to see them at 9.30 tomorrow to tell them abt Arthur & then I hurried home– Found Arthur still in the drawing room & I sat there talking quietly to N. Papworth till she took him back to bed abt 7.45. I dressed for dinner. Mr Charles Wyld & his brother Hugh—one of the Harrow eleven at Lord’s dined with Nelly & me– Rhuvon went to Roehampton with Mildred to dine. I was glad as the poor fellow is dreadfully cut up & miserable. When Nelly & the Wylds had gone I went to see Arthur. He was a little more sensible—but he seems very ill.
