9 July 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 9th [July 1898]. Arthur seemed a little better this morning. When I went into his room in the morning he pressed my hand & the tears stood in his eyes. Rhuvon & I both sat with him—but though he seemed to know us he could not express himself in speech. Mr Bond came at 10—& said he had just come from seeing Ivor at Wimborne House & had told him Arthur could not live more than about another week. Mr Bircham called about getting Arthur to sign some cheques. He went into Arthur’s room & shook hands with him & Arthur held his hand & seemed much moved. Mildred & Jack came & the former stayed here with Rhuvon a long time. Constance came in the morng & said she wd return later. Rhuvon, Nellie & I lunched in the studio. Dr Bond came at 2 to give Arthur his bath & said he found him a good deal better. He was wheeled in to the drawing room at 2.30 & remained there till about 7. I sat most of the afternoon working while he slept. Connie came in afternoon to see Nurse Papworth & she brought her to the drawing room door that she might see him while he slept. This is the first time she has seen him since his illness. Rhuvon went out of town abt 4 to return late tonight. Nellie & I had tea downstairs. We had a visit from Mr Wyndham Portal the Chairman of the S.W. Railway. He came to ask after Arthur & was very kind. As soon as he left I went out for a walk. Met Louis Du Cane at the door & he walked a little way with me. I called at 17 Cav. Sqr but all were out at Lord’s cricket match. I went on to 25 Park Crescent & Maria was out in a bath chair. So I took a walk in Regent’s Park & got home abt 7.30. Nellie dined out. I dined in my bedroom & sat with Arthur afterwards. He seemed clearer. He was awake & only dosed now & then. He really is a little better.
