11 July 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 11th [July 1898]. We thought Arthur was a little more lucid today tho’ his brain was troubled. He slept a great deal all day & we left him quiet only going in & out occasionally. Connie came to enquire before lunch also Blanche, but neither stayed long. I went up to Arthur’s room abt 4.30 & thought him less well & Bond came at 5 to give him his bath & said he found him every day a little worse– Arthur did not know him at all, & did not understand about his bath– He thought he was going rapidly down & would be insensible in a couple of days. This report quite knocked me over. Just then Sophy Palmer called. I felt I could hardly speak to her– Cornelia also called to take me out for a drive with her in her barouche. We went to the Embankment & St James’ Park & back by Constitution Hill. I felt as in a dream & longed to be home & out of the smart carriage with the fat coachman with a white wig & footman with powdered hair. Still the air did me good & Cornelia was very kind. I found Arthur on his couch in the drawing room & I & Nellie sat there sewing—Rhuvon reading & Arthur tried to talk now & then. Once when I arranged his shawl for him he smiled & patted me on the head– Another time he told me he wished I would leave him alone. He hardly knew what he said. Soon after 8 N. Papworth wheeled him back to his room & put him to bed. Rhuvon & I dined in the studio & sat talking till 10 when he left. I went & sat by Arthur a little while & then came to bed—when he said “Now you had better go home.” Nellie dined out. She is rather anxious abt her Aunt Lady Salisbury who is tomorrow to have an operation to remove the cist on her liver which has been making her so ill for this year past—for which she has been tapped twice this last week. Sophy Palmer was very distressed abt it & seems to think it a serious & risky thing. It is to be done tomorrow.
