29 August 1898 — Hatfield
Monday. 29th August [1898]. Nellie & I left by 11.15 train & went to Savile Row & there had some lunch & did some errands & had a visit from Mlle de Perpigna who happens to be in town. She [is] particularly kind & sympathetic & still handsome. This was a visit of condolence on my brother’s death. At 3 we joined Knapp at Waterloo Station & took the train to Salisbury. As the manoevures were going on there was a great crowd when we got there—soldiers of all sorts & kind & we passed large camps by the side of the railway. We arrived at Templecombe an hour after our time & were only just in time for 7.30 dinner. The party here at Inwood consists of my brother Merthyr & his wife Theo—his daughter Augusta & her ex-governess Miss Acland. We played whist after dinner & went to bed very early preparatory to tomorrow’s cub hunting.
