9 September 1898 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 9th [September 1898]. Began to make a little copy of the picture in the drawing room the “Herodia’s daughter with the head of John the Baptist” by Pordenone. When the light went off that room I began the Paris Bordone in the dining room. At 5 went out to the garden & found tea going on in the cricket field. Miss Mea Bernard was sketching the new herbaceous border under the terrace balustrade. Major & Mrs Churchill came to tea—also Mrs Henry Schreiber & her son the curate at Broadstone. Her husband is insane & shut up in an asylum. He is brother to my stepfather. I had not seen his wife since she was young abt 35 years ago—now she is oldish & fat—but people say she is very nice & kind. Mr & Mrs Evelyn Cecil also came over from Lylehill where they are staying with his father, Lord Eustace Cecil. After tea we took a solemn walk with the guests to the kitchen gardens and then they departed.
