10 September 1898 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday. 10th September [1898]. I continued my copying all the morng. Abt 4 the Hallam Murrays arrived bringing their son Arthur as a companion for little Oscar Guest. We left the Murrays sitting out in the garden with Rose & at 4.30 Cornelia & I went out driving in state in a carriage drawn by 2 horses & ridden by a postillion & with a groom in the rumble behind us. We drove through Wimborne to Kingston Lacy to call on Mrs Banks & have tea with her. The house is Inigo Jones—& full of beautiful things. The pictures are well known & very remarkable– The Spanish dining room lined with Cordova leather & with Zurbarans & Murillo’s—& a beautiful Italian ceiling is most interesting. Mrs Banks kindly took us to see it and also to see the Giorgione in the large dining room. Besides the fine pictures the furniture in the house is very beautiful old Italian cabinets, tables, chairs &c. The present Mrs Banks has arranged it all with great taste & the rooms were pretty with flowers well arranged. We drove home over the downs past High Hall where the Bernards live. On the way Cornelia spoke much about the quarrel between Rhuvon & Merthyr—& deplored the state of things. She wondered whether Ivor can offer to mediate. While I was dressing for dinner it struck me that I might go over to Bournemouth tomorrow to ask Richard & Merthyr, who will be there if this plan is feasible. I proposed it to Cornelia & she said she would discuss it with Ivor & if he agreed I can go to B’mouth tomorrow morning. (I went Sunday & saw Richard—& he advised me to go to Inwood to see Merthyr).
