14 September 1898 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Wednesday. 14th September [1898]. I got dressed early & went out before 9. Took a walk in the garden & was much amused by watching 2 squirrels playing in a big ilex tree chasing each other round & round & up & down. I went to the churchyard to look at the graves which in the new part now reserved for our family are becoming so numerous—5 years ago there were none—now there are three. I was coming away when I saw a tiny rabbit—evidently lost from its burrow. It hid in a corner & when I came in & saw little Oscar Guest & told him of it he wanted to go in search of it– I returned to the church yard with him & there the little beast still was & Oscar carried it off in triumph– Directly after breakfast I went off to the Wimborne Station & went by 10.38 train to Stalbridge to go to Inwood to talk to Merthyr about Ivor’s proposal to mediate in the Loan affair. A carriage met me at Stalbridge. On getting to Inwood I at once told Merthyr & Theo what Ivor proposed & they were much pleased. I told him to consult with Richard as to what could be done & to let Ivor know. I am in hopes that good may come out of my mission. I had only abt an hour to talk to them & then we had luncheon. Nelly Alderson was staying there & Mr Wyld & a Miss Franks. I had to leave directly after lunch to drive back to Stalbridge & leave by the 2.3 train for Broadstone where a Canford Carriage met me & took me to Canford. I went out to the garden & found Cornelia sitting there with Miss Mea Bernard. We sat there an hour talking & then came in to 5 o’cl tea in the long gallery. I found that Cornelia was driving into Poole alone so I offered to accompany her & we went off at 5.30 in the barouche. A meeting Cornelia went to turned out to be for tomorrow so after she had talked with some of her aids in good works & shown me the merci club we drove home again. It was a lovely hot evening & one cannot understand the days being so short in such hot weather. The heat is that of July. Played patience with Ivor after dinner.
