16 September 1898 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 16th September [1898]. I breakfasted in my room—& then packed my box for going to Milton Court. At 12 Sophy Palmer came to see me being on her way through town. We sat & talked together till lunch at 1—& after that meal she went on her way. Then Nellie & I went out together, called at Hayward’s in Bond St to see some old lace Felicia has sent there to be sold but they would not show it to us. Drove in a hansom to 56 Parliament St to see Mr Sam Bircham & ask if there is anything new abt Arthur’s affairs, wh there is not. Mr Bircham was glad to hear that there is a chance of Ivor’s mediation but is of opinion that it ought to be done now before things go further. Hearing this we went off to Gray’s Inn to see Richard Du Cane—but he did not agree to this idea & I settled to drop it. We drove back to Savile Row & I found a telegram from Mrs Rate asking me to change my hour of departure & come by 4.5 train from Victoria. So I had at once to get into a cab & go off. At the station I found Mr Rate & his daughter Enid Erskine & came here with them. The party is only Mr & Mrs Lachlan Jr & Lord Stanmore. Had tea in the garden & took a turn with Alice Rate. She dined in her own room being very delicate.
