17 September 1898 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Saturday. 17th [September 1898]. Began to copy a picture of fame which hangs in the dining room here. It was a very hot day & we had tea early & drove out afterwards & I went with Mrs Rate to call on Mr & Mrs Willy Bruce who have a lovely little house on the hill above Dorking. The Bruces were watering their dried up garden & said that they had just emptied their last cistern– There will soon be a water famine—it is so long since it has rained. Lady MacMurdo was staying with her daughter—a very picturesque handsome old lady. She spoke to me very kindly & we sympathised over our loneliness for she had been devoted to her husband who has not been very long dead. It was a lovely evening & we had a pleasant drive home. Mr Sydney Colvin arrived in the evening to stay till Monday & Mr Alan Erskine also.
