18 September 1898 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 18th [September 1898]. Rain at last! It rained hard for about 2 hours. I drove to Dorking church with Lord Stanmore & Mrs Lachie Rate. Mr Colvin went to Dorking with us & went on to see Mrs Louis Stevenson the widow of the novelist. We had a Harvest Thanksgiving service. The church decorated & ornamented with flowers, wheat ears, fruit & loaves of bread! We found the rain had ceased when the service was over so we walked back to Milton. Read after lunch till tea time & then sallied forth for a walk with Mrs Rate & Mr Colvin. Mrs Rate could not walk far so Mr Colvin & I walked on & came home by the fields. We had cold supper at 8.30– Bed at 10.30.
