19 September 1898 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 19th September [1898]. While I was dressing the post came in & brought me 2 letters from Leo & Jane Layard to say Edgar is very ill & they beg me to go & see him before I leave for Venice—so I decided to go to London today arrange many matters & go to Budleigh Salterton tomorrow. Mr Colvin went off by an early train. I left by 11.47 from Dorking. Lord Stanmore was to leave later—so the party broke up. I got home to Savile Row abt 1– Had lunch with Nellie. Monty is at home so I had a talk with him—& told him all about the state of affairs between Nellie & Mr Wild. I went to Brook St to see Miss Jefferey & returned by 5. Had tea & then went to Rigal to try on a dress– Nellie went with me in a hansom– It rained a little today & it is much cooler. Richard Du Cane & his son Dacre dined with Nellie & me–
