9 November 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 9th [November 1898]. Called at 7 & got back to my old habits of being up to breakfast at 9. Wrote letters, studied French &c. M. & Mme Jacques Blumenthal & Mrs Eden came to lunch with us. At 3 when the B’s left I took Carry to the garden in gondola. Just as we were starting a Col. & Mrs Graham (nephew & niece to Mrs Edgar Layard) called & Augusta kindly stayed to show them the house. After Carry had picked me a huge armful of chrysanthemums I left her & went to call on Mme de Hurtado & saw her in her room. She is better & leaves for Rome next week. Home to tea. Mr Carey called at tea time & told me how he is leaving Venice for good in a fortnight—& another Chaplain will be named– Ct Brando Brandolin later came—a boy still at school—a nice youth. Mr Pen Browning came most unexpectedly. I was delighted to see him. He told me that the girl “Ginevra” is to be married next Monday. She has long been the cause of quarrel between Pen & Fanny Browning—& it is good that she should be removed from his house. I begged him to come & live at Palazzo Rezzonico & he half promised to do so. Iduna Bel: came & stayed till nearly dinner time.
