23 November 1898 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 23rd [November 1898]. A pouring wet day—no going out. I copied pictures in the morning. Augusta came down to lunch. Mr Carey came to pay me a farewell visit as he leaves next week after having been chaplain here 5 years. Baron Krauss also came to tea to try some wines for me which I had sent me to taste. He stayed on a long time talking—very happy to have someone to talk to as he has a dull life here, I expect—& his wife is away at Meran dying of consumption. He is the official of the old school & a well informed pleasant man. The only drawback of his society is that he insists on talking English & expresses himself slowly & deliberately.
