11 January 1899 — Rome | |
Wednesday. 11th [January 1899]. I woke this morning rested & refreshed. Abt 11 A.M. Ersilia Canevaro came to see me & we went out walking together & I accompanied her back to the Palazzo della Consulta where she is now living in the apartment of the Min: for F.A. She showed me her rooms—the state ones garish—the private ones squalid. We met Canevaro in the street looking radiant. I walked back alone first to see the Curtis & then to the Hotel & lunched. At 3 Lady Vivian called for me. It was raining hard. We left cards & paid visits. Found Lady Blanche Morris at home & sat a short while with her. Went to the Consulta & paid Ersilia a state visit it being her “day at home.” There met & was introduced to many people—Count Zavagi, Bss Posetti (the Austrian Ambss) & also met Idita Bentivoglio & the Curtis. From there we went to Pal. Borghese & to call on Mrs Loftus who has one of the finest of the apartments in it. Met there Mrs Story & her mother & sister Mrs & Miss Broadwood. It was pouring so tremendously hard that I was going to dine with the Vivians Lady V. persuaded me not to return to my hotel but to go straight to her rooms & sit with her till dinner time which I did & she brought me back to the Angleterre at 10 when she went out at 10 to a party & I went to bed. | |
