12 January 1899 — Rome | |
Thursday. 12th [January 1899]. I went out walking in the morning up to the Villino Buoncompagni & sat an hour with Mme de Hurtado who was in her room with a bad cold—thence to Via Gregoriano 38 to lunch with Lady Somers & Addie Bedford. Met there a nice little American lady a Miss Cochrane & afterwards came in 2 Miss Walkers. Abt 2 I walked back to the hotel & waited for Ersilia Canevaro who called for me & I went for a drive with her & Maria Cozzi. We drove up to the top of the Janiculum Hill to see the Monument to Garibaldi which is splendidly placed & overlooks all Rome. The position is splendid & the horse fine but the figure is out of proportion & makes no effect. The groups of fighting & dying Italians on the base are bad taste & of too realistic style. We went to have tea at Miss Wilson’s tea room in the Piazza di Spagna—& then I returned to my hotel. Dined at 8 & Lady Louisa Legge sat & talked to me as I dined & then came to my sitting room for an hour. | |
