18 January 1899 — Rome
Wednesday. 18th [January 1899]. I went out at 11 A.M. to Via Gregoriana to see Lady Somers & took her the box of embroideries I had sent for to Canzi of Milan for her to choose from. Took a little turn on the Pinchio & then went to see Mme Hurtado & sat awhile with her. At 1 I went to lunch with Emily Lady Ampthill & her family at the Hotel Beausite a very nice new hotel. Sat with her awhile after lunch. We talked of various English diplomatists our friends & colleagues of former days– I went on for a walk to try & find Mme Henriette Castellani, widow of the antiquarian but was not successful—& left cards on Donna Laura Minghetti who has returned from visiting her daughter at Berlin. Left also a card on Dss Sermoneta—neither being at home. Dined at the hotel.
