4 March 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 4th [March 1899]. Typed in morning. After lunch went out in gondola to Piazza & to see Carrie who could hardly speak from her cold. There met Mme Noce– Mme Wiel called on me. I was sitting writing about 6 o’clock when Byford brought me up a card from Mr Browning saying he had just arrived & was on his way from the station & when would I like to see him. I sent down word to beg him to come & dine at 8. He did so & after dinner we talked till 11 about his & Fannie’s affairs and he convinced me that he was ready & anxious for reconciliation providing it should be permanent. I am now convinced, more than ever, that however he may & did give occasion for Fannie’s jealousy in his conduct as regards Ginevra (the cause of the parting) that he was never guilty of this behaviour & so I undertook to open communications with Fannie again & to try & effect a reconciliation.
