10 March 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 10th [March 1899]. Last night a hole was knocked in my gondola & it sunk & had to be taken off to be repaired. Iduna Bel. took me out in her gondola at 3. We went to the Piazza & did various little shoppings & returned here at 5 to tea. I found a telegram from Mrs Browning agreeing to my urgent appeal to her to return to her husband & offering to meet him at Genoa on Saty 18th. I wrote at once to tell him, he being away on the Riviera. Dined at 8 & wrote letters all evening till bed time.
