Monday. 13th [March 1899]. Typed all morning. Out in gondola at 3.30. Visited the Edens & had tea with them—then to Countess Papadopoli’s where there was a great afternoon reception. It was very hot & the smoking of cigarettes made a foul air which made it very unpleasant. Dined at 7.30. Received in the eveng. The Belmondos, Mme Wiel, Clara Montalba, Dss della Grazia & Maria her daughter, Grimani & Prof. Trombini came– Dull evening. Ct Grimani played the piano to us– Dull weather.
