8 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 8th [April 1899]. I typed away all the morning & finished copying the last despatches to add to Henry’s Memoirs just as the lunch bell rang. Though I am happy to have got it done I feel at the same time sad to think I have finished my work of love for him. I am grateful to have had it to do & to have been able to do it—for it has helped me thro’ the last five sad years & was a link with the past which I seemed to live over step by step again. I have completed the parts of his missions to Spain & Turkey & have only his early life to do which is a comparatively easy work– It is now all ready for publication should the right moment come. Went out after lunch in gondola with Lady Vivian to the Piazza. It was rather a cold day. Had my first dinner party since I have been alone– Besides Lady Vivian & the twin girls I had the Duke & Dss della Grazia, the Sindaco of Venice, Count Grimani of S. Tomà M. Passini the painter, Count Belmondo & Mr Moore. It was a hard evening for me—but I go through it better than I might have expected. It is just five years this week since Henry was taken ill & my happiness was at an end–
