11 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 11th [April 1899]. Louie V. & I went out in gondola in the morning to get some flowers & to do a little shopping & only returned just in time for lunch– Directly afterwards she & I & the twins went to Passini’s studio to see the portrait of the Dss of Madrid which he has just painted & when the girls had gone to the gondola he showed us his studies for a picture of Paris & the 3 graces. From there we went to Countess Albrizzi’s. She received us in the garden attached to her palace by a bridge over a small canal. There were a good many people there but it was cloudy, cold & dull. The Css showed the Vivians over the Palazzo which is profusely decorated with Vittorio’s stuccos—& is one of the only Venetian houses still kept up by its original owners—tho’ there is no longer any male descendant & the present family consists of a widow & 2 daughters. At 5.30 Lady V. & I went to the station to meet H.M. The Empress Frederick of Germany who arrived from Florence at 6 P.M. There were only the German Consul & his wife, our V. Consul, Herr Passini & ourselves there. The G. Consul’s wife presented her with a bouquet. I walked with H.M. & carried her bouquet to the gondola– She spoke at once of her recent losses & of mine– She asked after my sister Maria & her daughter Ola. She has gone to lodge at the Hotel Britannia. Lady V. & I went to the Piazza & walked home from there.
