17 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 17th April [1899]. Breakfasted at 8 as usual. Visit from Mr Christie & arranged he should be at the Church at 3 to meet the Empress Frederick. The Holman Hunt family came at 11.30 & I showed them round the pictures & they were most appreciative & Holman Hunt spoke of Ruskin & how they had been here together in the Sixties. He was much interested in our picture of the Adoration of the Magi by Bellini on account of the Oriental costumes in it. Directly after lunch I went off to Hotel Britannia to fetch Her Majesty & we went straight to S. Vio where Mr Christie was waiting for us. H.M. was pleased with the frieze & gave various suggestions as to the organ loft, & the further decorations of the reredos—the E. end &c. From there we went in to Rubelli’s silk works & Biondetti’s stone cutting works—then on to the Sailor’s Institute at the Folentini & H.M. went into every detail & even remarked that the floor wanted cleaning. Thence I took her to an antiquaries but we bought nothing—on to the R. Yacht “Osborn.” The Princess of Wales had arrived at 2 o’cl. The 2 daughters Pss Charles of Danemark & Pss Victoria had been here waiting for her. She had rushed from Genoa to Copenhagen for her father the King’s 80th birthday. She was looking as lovely as ever & was very sweet & kind. There was afternoon tea in the deck saloon & she poured it out for us & we all sat round the table. She had with her Col. Stanley Clarke, Adl Stephenson & Miss Knowles, also a french exgoverness Mrs Johnstone, who had been doing lady in waiting to the Princesses in the Princess of Wales’ absence. We stayed on board till past 6 when I accompanied H.M. back to Hotel Britannia in the Osbourne steam launch—got my gondola there & left her. Looked in to see Iduna Bel & came home tired out. Byford told me this morning that Lady Vivian’s man servant last night was drunk when they left & she had great trouble.
