18 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 18th [April 1899]. A horrid wet morning. Wrote—worked at reverse of the medal with Henry’s portrait that I am doing to be cast in bronze. Went to take Iduna out in gondola but she sent to say she wd not go today so I went alone & did some commissions & came home to tea before 5 o’cl. I was sitting at tea reading when Byford came to say the Princess of Wales was here & I ran out to greet her on the stairs with Miss Knowles & Col. Stanley Clarke. She said she had come just for a moment & could not stop to tea as she had invited the Empress to tea on board the Osborne. She went through the rooms admiring everything & saying it was all so lovely & so comfortable and even the tea table looked pretty. H.R.H. would not sit down but after going through the house left at abt ¼ to 6. I thought she would arrive very late for the Empress’ tea. I went to dine at the Hotel Britannia with the Empress & met Herr Passini & his daughter Frañ Hermann—a very handsome young woman beautifully dressed. After dinner M. & Mme Manati, Sig & Signora Wiel & the Sindaco joined the party & we sat chatting till 10 when I came home to bed. The others went to a wedding party at Palazzo Vendramin given by the D. & Dss della Grazia on the marriage of their daughter Caroline.
