19 April 1899 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 19th [April 1899]. Went to the station to see the Empress Fred. start by the 8.45 train for Verona. Clara Montalba, Passini, the English & German Consuls, the Prefet & Sindaco were there. H.M. sleeps tonight at Verona & goes on tomorrow to Trent. I had a horrid headache & as soon as I got home had to lie on the sofa but at 10.30 there came a note from Miss Knollys asking me to meet the Princess of Wales at Moisé della Torres’ antiquity shop so I jumped up dressed & went off & she soon joined me there. We spent an hour there & H.R.H. bought several things & was delighted with her purchases. We went on to Dorigo marble works where H.R.H. ordered a Verona marble fountain for her garden & bought a few other small things. From Dorigo we went on to Besarel the wood sculptor & delighted the old man by H.R.H. visit. He was almost moved to tears. She had bought of him when first she came to Venice years ago. Today she took a few small things & also took a trifle or two from Michiele the worker in bronze– I hurried home from here having invited Major the Honble E. Burke to lunch with me. He was waiting for me. We had last met at Cairo in Egypt. He is an old friend of my youth & is now aging & delicate in the lungs. After lunch Carry Eden called—& then when she left I took Major Burke out to della Torres’ shop in search of curios. He found nothing he cared for—so I deposited him at Hotel Danielli & then returned home to have tea & to rest being still very tired & headachy. I dined at 8 & went to bed early.
